The challenge
As Coventry Building Society Arena evolves to host a wider variety of events, the team needed to develop their payments system and implement a modern solution that could scale across the entire site – from VIP boxes and bars in the stadium bowl, to exhibition halls, restaurants and the on-site hotel.
Speed, flexibility, and the ability to handle large transaction volumes were critical. The team at the Arena wanted the ePOS system and payments to go hand in hand to help deliver a better customer experience.
The solution
Coventry Building Society Arena worked with Oracle’s Simphony POS system and needed a payment partner that could easily integrate with the existing software. Oracle recommended Planet as a trusted partner, together offering a fully integrated solution with ePOS and payments on PAX terminals.
With portable terminals deployed throughout the venue, staff could serve guests more quickly and efficiently, thanks to faster transaction times. This helped to reduce queues during high-pressure, busy events like football matches. Staff could easily reach and serve more customers in the boxes around the stadium bowl within short windows of time, boosting spend per head and customer satisfaction on match days.
It has also meant the team can easily move and set up terminals throughout the stadium depending on the events taking place, creating flexibility and optimising payments during different events around the venue. “With Planet, we can flip from a match day straight into an exhibition within a few hours,” said Jack Wright, Financial Controller at Coventry Building Society Arena.
Planet’s solution also supports a wide range of payment methods, including digital wallets and local payment methods, ensuring transactions are seamless for both local and international visitors.

The result
On busy match and event days, a key goal was to reduce queues and serve customers at speed. With Planet’s solution, the arena has seen reduced transaction times and increased spend per head, as customers spend less time waiting in line at the bar or cafe. With match attendance growing year on year, the impact of reduced transaction times is a key success measure for the team.
Importantly, with payments integrated with Simphony on PAX terminals, staff can now serve and take payments from customers on one device, eliminating bottlenecks and creating a more agile operation in the boxes. The mobile payment device integrated with Oracle Simphony reduces errors and speeds up fulfilment, meaning staff can cover more than one box at a time, and have more time to focus on the customer experience.
